Modern day Kickboxing is an eclectic mix of all styles of martial and combat sports, Integrity Kickboxing for instance is heavily influenced by Western Boxing, Taekwondo and Muay Thai. However it’s roots go back to Asia way back in the 6th century with fighting systems such as Kalaripayattu, Lethwei and Pradal Serey, these systems would have been taught to the soldiers in each Asian country. Muay Thai is possibly the most renowned and influential style of kickboxing, sometimes referred to as ‘The art of eight limbs’ (Two hands, two feet, two knees and two elbows) Some of the older styles even used the head to add to the fighters ability to strike.

Modern day Kickboxing training began to take shape in the 1960s and 1970s, as martial artists began to experiment with new techniques and strategies. The earliest kickboxing competitions were held in Japan, and the sport quickly spread to other parts of Asia, Europe, and the United States. The American Martial Artists were frustrated with the strict rules that governed their individual arts, and Fighters such as Joe Lewis(bottom right), Bill Wallace (centre) and Benny Urquidez (bottom left) led the way in revolutioning the traditional martial arts that they had been taught.
